Cannibal Holocaust guest movie review

Bestial gorefest? Pirandellian exploitation exposé? Both? The most notorious taster of the outrageously lurid Italian jungle-massacre subgenre, Ruggero Deodato’s purposefully unwatchable opus questions the film image’s validity while debasing it. The moral is didactic (”I wonder who the real cannibals are,” wondered at the New York City skyline), but there are plenty of Chinese boxes [...]

Haruki Murakami’s TONY TAKITANI in theaters July 29th

I’m a huge fan of Haruki Murakami, The Wind Up Bird Chronicle being my favorite book of all time. I had often wondered about the possibility of film adaptations of his books. I realized that for the romantic stories this would be feasible, but for the most part, for example with the aforementioned Chronicle, Dance Dance Dance, Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World the detours into the surreal and bizarre might not translate all that easily to film. Thus, to say I was jazzed to hear about a Murakami film adaptation would be an understatement.

REMAKE VICTIM — Kurosawa’s Kairo

Following the trend of regurgitating Japanese horror films such as The Ring, Juon/The Grudge and Dark Water, the Weinstein’s Dimension Films will remake Japanese horror thriller Kairo or Pulse, based on a screenplay adaptation by Wes Craven and Ray Wright. READ MORE »

Charisma (aka Karisuma) movie review

Restore the rules of the world… Freedom’s just another disease… A truly healthy human longs to obey… These [magic] mushrooms are delicious!

CAN’T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES? Kiyoshi Kurosawa became one of my favorite filmmakers rather quickly, although it has been a bumpy ride. I was enthralled by Cure, regrettably rushed through [...]

Bugatti Fahrvergnügen

You know the car wars; the battle for buyouts continue until everyone merges with each other in some weird way. Ford purchased Jaguar (I cried that day) then Volvo and LandRover, Daimler-Benz joined Chrysler, VW bought Bentley and Rolls Royce right out of BMW’s grasp, although they later granted BMW the rights to build [...]

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (aka Joshuu 701-go: Sasori) movie review

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion is the first film in the Scorpion trilogy, as well as the first film by director Shunya Ito. Based on the manga of the same name, The story follows Nami Matsushima (Meiko Kaji), the fiercest inmate in the Japanese women’s prison system, and for that matter, all women in prison films. [...]

Hooray for Weekends!

If you know Chris, you know that he’s spontaneously wacky yes, but he’s also very chill. And after a week of work and Calculus and Programming and other brainiac activities, he’d be happy to just kick back and watch a few movies or play some video games. That’s where opposites attract.. or maybe [...]

NASA shuttle launch delayed.. again

We were at the NASA Ames Research Center this weekend and were elated to see the sign out front that proclaimed the countdown [2 days!] for the next shuttle launch. Unfortunately, as far as the Space Race goes, America is down for the count.
NASA officials troubleshooting a sensor malfunction in the space shuttle Discovery [...]

She’s On Duty (aka: Jambok-geunmu) movie review

She’s On Duty (aka: Jambok-geunmu), directed by newcomer Park Kwang-Chun, is your standard cop goes undercover in a school story, but with a Korean schoolgirl twist. Really, that’s about it. You’ve seen this type of story played out in numerous films including Plain Clothes and even the upcoming Underclassman. Jae-in (Seon-a Kim) is a rough [...]

FREE JAZZ in Palo Alto!!

I’ve always been smitten with the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. And I don’t even drive a 7 series bimmer. It is an outdoor mall, meaning that it is not only a welcome switch from the ubiquitous strip and box malls, but that it is dotted with gorgeous overflowing oversized container gardens [...]

An excellent article from this week’s Newsweek

This weeks’s The Last Word column, What We Owe What We Eat, by George F. Will is surprisingly insightful.

Creative Essay guest submission

This is from my friend Jett, who is a fantabulous music guru and who will hopefully be posting some neat-o album reviews. Here is one of his creative writing samples, exclusively for Dreamlogic. Maybe it’ll start a trend for future reader submissions (*hinthint-nudgenudge-winkwink*) –Kris

Tech Stuff guest columnist

So hey, meet and greet Guest Columnist and my friend Al, who constantly surprises me. When we first met, he was this Goth who swore he was going to be a chef or something. He’s now researching techie and web news and has built up the rights to be called a fellow “nerd”.. [...]

Hillary Clinton takes on GTA San Andreas

If you don’t want kids to encounter any sort of objectionable material you’d have to home school them, prevent them from using the internet, prevent them from interacting with other kids, and prevent them from viewing the nighttime news, which, incidentally, also happens to be the number one place for viewing of ads for Cialis and Levitra.

Wonka Nerds Rope munchies review

We’re looking forward to the movie Corpse Bride from the Depp/Burton power team, but we’re going to have to pass on the Willy Wonka remake… well, until we can possibly procure a freebie DVD or something during rental season. Until then, Wonka Nerds Ropes will have to suffice.. well not just suffice, they are [...]

EPISODE 3: The Backstroke of the West

Apparently in China the bootlegged version of Star Wars Episode III has been translated from English to Chinese, and back to English, with some very strange results.

NOOOOOOOOO!

Spirited Away (aka Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) guest movie review

Anime isn’t for everyone. I know this, having been in my life both an enemy and a fan of the style. Just like styles of music, not everyone will like every style of animation. Given that, though, even people who aren’t anime fans can find something to like about Spirited Away.
Director Hayao [...]
