After a disappointing run earlier in the month at the San Francisco Sakura Matsuri or Cherry Blossom Festival, we were expecting more from this weekend’s events in Cupertino and San Jose and had fun perusing the craft booths and exhibits, listening to koto players and enka singers.
SJ and SF Nihon Machi (Japantowns) are two of [...]
Sometimes I ponder the oddities of life. Okay I ponder about them a lot. Like why would people in Hawai’i stand in line all day for a cream puff? Well, that’s what happened when Beard Papa first opened up shop. Well, at first they kinda piggybacked on Shirokiya, a local Japanese [...]
So here are a few more quick reviews of films I couldn’t, or wouldn’t devote more time to. And to those looking for bad reviews, you’ve got a couple to keep you entertained.
Astonishing (aka: Jing xin dong po) – The only astonishing thing about this film is how terrible it is. The film, concerning main [...]
Calpis Co., Ltd is a well-known Japanese soft drink mogul, despite their highly unappetizing name* and proven efforts in creating actual health sustaining fluids such as AmealPeptide, which counteracts hypertension. They have a milky white beverage that resembles diluted milk because that’s exactly what it is, and is even called Calpis Water. It’s a [...]
At first glance, buildings designed by the King of Deconstructivism Frank Gehry are not exactly synonymous with phrases like “beautiful” or the first choice for designs for jewelry mogul Tiffany, but at second glance, they can be sweepingly graceful like a Mobius cutout. There’s no denying that they are, to say the very least, [...]
Okay, I know it’s amazing how many people in America are at least bilingual. And I know how tough the English language can be. That still doesn’t prevent dummies like me from enjoying Engrish and ESL examples. Here’s a guy trying to sell his “billigant” “love car” online, no shit-talking now, “I [...]
Just came across this on Fangoria.
Variety reports that Alcon Entertainment, Intermedia and Kadokawa Pictures will produce and Warner Bros. will release an English-language remake of ONE MISSED CALL, Takashi Miike?s 2003 chiller. The original (pictured) was Miike?s entry in the post-RINGU cycle of supernatural films, in which a group of young friends receive mysterious calls [...]
I’ve been using Firefox since it was called Firebird, but I can’t deny being at least somewhat curious about Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7. Anyways Microsoft has just released IE7 Beta 2 for public download. Check it out here.
So far I really like the font rendering. Fonts are super smooth even when magnified 400%. Pages look [...]
Just received this press release from MTV.
April 24, 2006 (Santa Monica, CA) - More than an award show, but a film unto itself, MTV: Music Television today announced the cast, or nominees, of the “2006 MTV Movie Awards.” Up for starring roles are the “40-Year Old Virgin” and “Wedding Crashers,” each receiving five nominations. Also [...]
Okay, so it’s not brand new, but it’s darn funny. Check it out here.
So we’re starting a new segment at Dreamlogic.net, reviewing short film submissions by local filmmakers. Our first Submission comes to us from San Francisco’s Jeffrey Lei. A mockumentary about a fictional Asian male porn megastar in the 1970’s titled, simply enough, Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star.
A mix of big foot documentary and television’s Unsolved [...]
Criminal Woman: Killing Melody, the first film in the Criminal Woman series, marks the 10th pairing of Reiko Ike and Miki Sugimoto, and frankly, it is one of the best.
The film opens on Reiko Ike in a trendy go-go club. Dressed in everyday housewife garb and looking quite worried, she seems incredibly out of sync [...]
The San Francisco International Film Fest is starting this weekend. Many cool films, including Seijun Suzuki’s Princess Raccoon. I’l admit, some of the films shown can be purchased down on Clement for cheaper than the price of two tickets, but it’s still nice to see these on the big screen.
Check out the lineup here.
Kris and I drove deep into the ghettos of Milpitas (Mill-pete-ass), braving hip-hop kids, speak-and-spell readers, and pretentious cinematic greenhorns (aka: film students) to catch a late evening screening of Silent Hill. Was it any good?
She Said:
Thanks to my awesome awesome friend “CapnT”, Chris and I got to view this sneak preview. Now I know [...]
Ahhh, remember the days when only the Superpowers possessed nukes? The fun and frolicking Cold War times when America could really focus all of its hatred and aim all of its WPM on (basically) the Soviet Union. Back when you had an enemy you could count on. *sigh* Those were the days.
Nowadays [...]
The trailer for the new Leonard Cohen documentary is up. Check it out here.
If I were still my bachelor self from six years back, I think Terrifying Girls’ High School: Lynch Law Classroom might have been my favorite film in the set. However, for the me that exists today, the film was a tad uninteresting. The second film in the Terrifying Girls High School series came as the [...]
If you were to analyze it, Lucky Number Slevin proffers many questions, most tear into the plot and needn’t be asked anyway. Questions like, can a Rabbi (played by the wonderfully odd Sir Ben Kingsley) also be an adequate mob kingpin? Can benevolent Morgan Freeman (as The Boss) portray the Rabbi’s ultimate [...]
