Okay, we’re back with our second Geneon DVD contest (Congrats to our two Hellsing Ultimate DVD winners.). This is for the first disc of the upcoming Disgaea Series from Geneon (box art below). See our original post on the Disgaea DVDs here. Being that I’m not that familiar with the world of Disgaea, I’m going [...]
The SF Indie Fest just announced their opening and closing night films for the 2007 festival. The former, as mentioned in the title of this article, will be David Lynch’s latest, Inland Empire. From the SF Indie MySpace blog:
On Thursday, February 8, 2007 we are delighted to open the Festival with David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE. [...]
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Dreamlogic.net hopes you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to New Year celebrations. Although Chris and I don’t really drink because we’re naturally high (LOL), and we think that the only good champagne is one drowned out in a mimosa or frozen into a sorbet, we do enjoy the [...]
There are shocking films, there are violent films, and there are disturbing films, and the occasional picture that combines all three. But rarely do you come across a film that exhibits pure savagery. Pou-Soi Cheang’s Dog Bite Dog is just such a film. Steeped in unbridled brutality and oppressive nihilism, it is a draining, disgusting, [...]
If you have even the most rudimentary interest in Chinese Art cinema, you might be wondering where all the intelligent pictures have gone. The Raise the Red Lanterns have been replaced with Flying Daggers, the Farewelling Concubines with flying bird women. Well, now, with Xiaogang Feng’s The Banquet you have something to look forward [...]
A bit more catchup. And, really, what better time than the holidays? Since my “capsules” are rather lenghty, this column now has a new title. Please enjoy these Reviews In Brief.
Party 7 . Initially I wasn’t going to review this, but seeing as Party 7 will be released by Synapse in 2007, I know some [...]
Being a Meiko Kaji and Teruo Ishii, I am pretty excited about Discotek Media’s announcement that they will be releasing Blind Woman’s Curse on DVD this coming March. The basic storyline is your standard wrongful imprisonment and vengeance tale, but with Ishii’s signature visuals, and Kaji’s uber coolness to round it out. So nice.
Check out [...]
If there’s one thing Hiroyuki Nakano has demonstrated over the course of his five films, it is an absolute love for life in all its forms. His keen visual style, vibrant use of color (and high contrast black and white), carefully chosen music, and unguarded enthusiasm infuse his films with an undeniable fun and pep [...]
My friend sent me this cool little doc from YouTube regarding Michael Jackson’s original contract with Sega to compose the music for Sonic 3, and the very strong possibility that his music was used, without credit, due to MJ scandals of the time.
Check out the YouTube video here and decide for yourself.
So Lost, Heroes, and the like are quite popular with the Gen-Y crowd these days, but I’m betting some of you elitist hunters of strange are hankering for some interesting hour long entertainment that doesn’t require a season long investment to appreciate. For you, I perscribe the weird world of Vermillion Pleasure Night.
Vermillion Pleasure Night [...]
In an effort towards catching up, here are a few more capsule reviews. Note that we do have some full reviews in the queue, including Brick, Chiseen,The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai, and Stereo Future. On to the capsules:
Beerfest . Holy crap! A Broken Lizard film that’s actually funny! Okay, so Super Troopers had a [...]
Given the stats for the Hellsing articles, it appears you guys are digging these Anime news items. Well, Geneon has sent us some items for their upcoming Disgaea DVD release. We’ll have a contest (just like with Hellsing) and reviews of the discs closer to the release date. I’m not familiar with the games this [...]
Ah, remember those days when you went to a cocktail party to straddle your girlfriends? Is this effective advertising? You be the judge.
Thanks to the good folks at Geneon, Dreamlogic.net is giving away two Hellsing Ultimate Series 1 Standard Edition DVDs. They’re the same as the one we reviewed here. Now, we know you guys aren’t big on any contest that requires more than a sentence for an entry, so we’re making this really simple.
For your chance [...]
Having seen, and enjoyed the original Hellsing television series, I was a little surprised about the Hellsing Ultimate redo of the Hellsing series. Apparently series creator Kouta Hirano was less than happy with the original product, citing problems with the order of events in the series, as well as the introduction of non-manga villain Incognito [...]
So I was looking for some cool tea canisters online when I browsed the Numi Organic Tea site, thinking all was fine and normal and dandy, when OH MY GOD! Gila monsters and sea creatures attack! Of course I’m joking, but I am a bit disturbed at these new “flowering tea” bobbles. [...]
As much as I hate “it’s like film x meets film y” type proclamations, I feel compelled to do it with Rob-B-Hood. I mean, the film’s premise is so simple that such superficial comparisons prove quite apt. Rob-B-Hood sees Jackie Chan and Yuen Bio as thieves tasked with kidnapping an upper-crust society baby for a [...]
So, Funimation was nice enough to send us the first episode of Afro Samurai, complete with the new voiceovers by Samuel L. Jackson, Kelly Hu, and Ron Perlman. To be honest I have no familiarity with Takashi Okazaki’s Manga, or the original Japanese Language cut of the miniseries, so I really had no idea what [...]
