We saw this one a while back and have been meaning to report on it. The story revolves around a group of 9 prison inmates who, after escaping, attempt to return to their old lives. Though they try their best to start new lives, eager to move on from assorted dark pasts, they find the people on the outside won’t let them; the physical prison they escaped merely exchanged with an invisible one whose walls are fortified equally by prejudice and an inescapable history. This film is downright amazing. The acting, music, and direction is superb, and the story heart-wrenching and captivating. While I haven’t yet watched director Toshiyaka Toyada other film, Blue Spring, I would definitely say he is one to watch when it comes to new Japanese cinema. Check it out!
