AnimEigo, the company that brought you wonderfully restored versions of Lady Snowblood, Red Lion, Demon Spies, and near all of the Lone Wolf and Cub films has just completed a painstaking restoration of Shogun Assassin, released on a special edition DVD this month. Now, those of you who are fans know this film has not been available through any legitimate release for the past few decades. In fact, it is widely regarded, next to Deep Throat and Cannibal Holocaust, as one of the most bootlegged films of all time. AnimEigo understands all this, and as a way of generating more interest in their release, has announced an “Amnesty” offer. Those of us (yes, myself included) who have purchased bootleg versions of the film can send in our copy, along with a $10 payment, and receive the newly restored Special Edition DVD in trade. It’s that simple. Sure, some of you may scoff at paying $10 extra for something you already own, but, if you love Shogun Assassin, it’s not much to ask for a decent print of the film (finally!).
You can check out the amnesty agreement here. Also, be sure to check out some of AnimEigo’s restoration examples here. Lastly, check out our review of the film, here.
