Best Films of 2005

I don’t know what it was, but 2005 was a pathetic year at the boxoffice. So much crap was shoveled into the cineplexes we couldn’t even come up with a top 10 best of the year. Even most critically acclaimed films were still derivative of such tried and true formulas that nothing truly new was brought to the table. We did, however, manage to pick eight films that were as original as they were daring, and helped save 2005 from being completely dismissable. In addition we have awarded films certain accolades for various categories, even though they may or may not have been of the calibre to put on our best of list.

Where possible we have linked reviews for the titles listed.

Our Magnificent Eight of 2005 (in no particular order):

Honorable Mentions:

Best films we saw this year (regardless of 2005 release):
Kris: Doppelganger
Chris: 9 Souls

Quote of the year:

  • “I want to poop Back and forth” - Me, You, and Everyone We Know

Most overrated film of the year:

  • A History of Violence

Movies where the ending ruined the whole film:

  • War of the Worlds
  • High Tension

Biggest Surprise:

Most unfairly hated:

Biggest Butt Clencher (aka: film with scenes so painful to watch symptoms manifest themselves physically):

  • Mysterious Skin

Worst Films:

There you have it. Feel free to post your own best of list, as well as feedback on our own list below.

  1. Good list. I would add Serenity though. Best sci-fi film EVER.

My best include Batman Begins, Serenity, and Wedding Crashers.

I agree. This year did suck for the most part.

  2. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire
    Serenity
    Good Night, and Good Luck
    Walk The Line
    Sin City
    Ong Bak
    March Of The Penguins
    Broken Flowers
    Syriana
Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith

of what I saw, these were the top 10. I could compile a much longer list of shit I wanted to see but didn’t make it around to seeing.
