CD Warehouse is Closing

I just got home from work this evening to find a message waiting on our home phone (we don’t own a cellphone). It was my buddy Greg and he had some sad news to report. Compact Disc Warehouse, the store many people in the area know and love, is going out of business.

Due to this fact this weekend they’re having a closing sale where everything in the store is 25% off. Everything. Used, new, dvd, cd, and more. To give you an idea of what you can get with this type of discount, I headed down there tonight and picked up unadulterated versions of The Tai Chi Master and Fist of Legend, starring Jet Li, Alien from LA starring Kathy Ireland, Police Story 2, starring Jackie Chan, and the insanely funny Aqua Teen Hunger Force volume 3. To top it off I pocked up Donovan’s greatest hits, the Layer Cake soundtrack, and a reggae album by “The Vulcans” titled, simply, “Star Trek”, all for under $60.

Reasons for the closure cited on signs within the store include CD Copying, competition from online retailers, big box discounts by the big electronic stores, and the ever increasing price of gas. Now CD Warehouse may not be as big as Rasputin, Streetlight, or Amoeba, but it did have its share of hard to find flicks and quality cd’s. And they paid the highest buyback prices I’ve ever encountered. While there are other Compact Disc Warehouses (we encountered one in Austin, Texas) they’re all independently owned, and have a vibe all their own. They’re definitely not Tower Records.

Though the closure date is not set in stone yet, they’re trying to get as much merchandise out the door as possible this week/end. Do youself a favor and head down to the store, snatch up a few choice deals, and say goodbye to one of the last great neighboorhood record stores.

  3. The staff at CD Warehouse were very nice, knowledgable and helpful. They did special orders (w/10-15% discount). I will miss this store. It was one of a kind, in Sunnyvale even! and I didn’t even have to go to a mall (that’s what I’ll miss most…)

  4. I sure am going to miss that place.

I am now without a job and a place to get CDs (as well as a CD hookup). I guess Streetlight and Rasputin are going to have to battle it out to get that number one spot.

Just don’t forget to pour out a little liquor next time, folks.

  6. [...] to suffer through the flops then that’s just wasteful time- and money-wise. So when CD Warehouse offered its discounts, I couldn’t help but appease my inner fogey. [...]

  7. This is really shocking news.I drove by one day to find the store completely vacant. My heart sank.I’ve been shopping there for 15 years.I blame this on those cheesy-assed mp3 players & Ipods with the poor sound quality. The thing I will miss most is being able to special order them hard to find CDs.

  8. I foundout a few months ago, and it was quite a bummer. I had been shopping there since members of long defunct band Clubber Lang worked there.

I saw marillion do an instore acoustic gig there in 1992, and I discovered I do not know how much behind the listening stations over the years.

I still have two of their Customer Reward Cards (of which one was full). Guess I won’t be redeeming them…
