I noticed we’ve been getting quite a few searches for radio station 104.9 these past few days, 104.9 being a Clear Channel operated “alternative” rock station in San Jose, which I ragged on in a musings article a while back. So, on my way to work I decided to take a listen and see what all the searches were about. Upon flipping the dial my ears were met with sounds soulful love songs….in Spanish.
104.9, the “music alternative” has been replaced by Ciento-quatro punto nueve, Radio Romantica.
I did a little bit of research and it appears Clear Channel opted to switch the station at the new year given there being a much larger Spanish speaking demographic than an Alternative Rock demographic. To be honest, using that kind of criteria you could say there is a larger English speaking demographic than a romantic ballads demographic, but business people have never been known for their logic skills. Anyways this is the second station Clear Channel has switched to Spanish language in the past year.
There is a petition up to restore the old 104.9, but in the meantime I suggest all you 104.9 fans get used to the real deal, the independent, Clear Channel free, Live 105.

i am still pissed that ksjo is gone. losing channel was just adding salt to the wound. that leaves us with only one decent alternative/rock station left live 105.3, i’ve been actually listening to mix 106.5 to fill in the void that was once channel 104.9
damn clear channel.
I refuse to take down my 104.9 bumpersticker off my car.
Come back New Music Alternative because live 105 just won’t do it for me.
i much prefer live 105 to channel 104.9, though i thought channel was a good radio station. i just like a little more ‘alternative’ in my radio diet- bands that live 105 plays and channel did not. (clap your hands say yeah, panic! at the disco, wolf parade, my morning jacket, shout out louds, thrice, etc) i also like more of the special shows live 105 has like soundcheck and the local lounge.
channel 104.9 was a good station as a second choice for me, but i just couldn’t take all the nickelback and 3 doors down records they would play.
The evil of clear channel has seeped its infection to the East Coast as well. I have long since left being a listener to broadcast radio except for Elliot in the Morning which is also brought to me via clear channel. We have also had a number of stations dropped or changed, due to supposed demographic listeners. Screw syndicated radio…
Good riddance. Was a shit station anyway.
Channel 104.9 had it’s good points and it’s bad points. One of the main good points I miss about 104.9 was the fact that it didn’t have a morning show. I really don’t care what some sassy voice has to say in the morning about this or that. Alternatively, I love to wake up to a song I love. Not to say that happened every day with Channel, just more often than hearing some annoying people gossip about nothing. I just think Clear Channel shot themselves in the foot, now the only alt. rock station belongs to Infinity, and CC has eliminated their young audience, potential future listeners. Good job CC, good job.
I am so pissed of that they took away 104.9 I lisened to this station for years. And I really don’t want to say bad word on here but I have so much anger in my heart rightnow I just want to screem!!!!! I fuckin swear, who every came up with this is going to blow it for everyone, who every this bone head ass is. I’m sorry if I used to much bad words, and am sorry to who ever did this But it was a LAME IDEA!!!!!
-?
I am pissed of that they did this
I AM SO FUCKIN PISSED OF!!!!!
This is why I stopped listening to the radio in the late 90s…no actually it was because most of the music sucked…this would have been my reason if I quit radio in the early 2000s…
I was so shocked to hear Spanish music from my 104.9 alternative. This shift might be a business reason, but you guys are losing us. Give me back my 104.9!
I was totally shocked too. All the more reason to use the iPod instead of radio now. :(
I lived in Mountain View in 2002-2003 and got into the habit of listening to channel 104.9 on the net when I went back to Switzerland !
What a shock to hear this morning that the channel I listened to does not exist anymore…
It was a good way to hear new music for us, europeans ! For instance, Jack Johnson only starts now to pass on the french radios… I will miss channel 104.9 greatly !!!
If you want an alternative to new music you should listen to KFox.
You 1049ers are lame.
i miss kat and johnny who cares
