Yah, I’m a little late announcing it, but yah it opened a little late because they wanted the Grand Opening to be “just perfect”. What’s with Japanese and detailed perfectionism anyways? Ruins my life! Just kidding. Anyway, Daiso is a store packed with tons of cutesie utilitarian items from Japan and on the cheap. Some folks call it a “dollar store” type, but it’s generally way more expensive than Ichiban Kan, which to me is a true dollar store, which sometimes (if rarely) holds a caveat (that $1.50 12-pack Pocky you just bought? Expiry date: tomorrow) but non-perishables are sturdy and generally a buck-ish. Sweet!
I heard that Ichiban Kan is going to (finally) open an online store hopefully next month. Nothing compares to the real thing though: getting thwacked by tiny yet very pushy elderlies, or overhearing asinine teeny-bopper convos over by the Insta-Ramen while being trapped in the corner. What? Did someone just step on my foot? Yep, Ichiban Kan is pretty darn small. Daiso is no picnic either, you pretty much get the same crowds smashed together on busy days. Hey, everyone loves cute, everyone loves a bargain.
Daiso Japan opened in Mountain View on October 8th and I probably will be avoiding it for a while since it’s right next to the Trader Joe’s that seems to hire only milf-hunting perverts as cashiers. There’s also a freshly opened San Jose Daiso in Eastridge Mall, and one in Union City. So quit whining that there isn’t a Daiso in your area; at this rate, there’s bound to be one soon.
