Dreamlogic Update Feb 2008

It’s time for another Dreamlogic update. I’ve almost finished the anime review pile from Funimation, so you’ll have reviews of School Rumble vol 5 and Negima - Complete Series shortly. In the Japanese film corner, we’ll be covering a number of Kino releases, including Seijun Suzuki’s Taisho Trilogy, three of the recent Masaru Konuma Nikkatsu “Roman Pink” titles, and their release of Vibrator. And, time permitting, we hope to have some other reader requests, such as Beat Takeshi’s Getting Any, Red Angel, and LPS: Okatsu the Fugitive.

In the past few weeks Kris and I have seen a number of mainstream Hollywood releases, and we will be reviewing those, time permitting. These include Stuart Gordon’s Stuck, and oscar contenders There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. Excellent films all, though I’m not sure if any is a “best work” of their respective directors.

And that’s about it.

In the meantime, treat your ears to some Pizzicato Five:

  1. i like kino’s ‘tokyo trash baby’ (another of their hiroki, released early 07 by them) and ‘tattooed flower vase’ (by konuma, a nikkatsu romanporno, released by them late 07) very much indeed. ‘vibrator’ is a better film that the other two hiroki’s they released, but i’d already seen that on korean dvd… i’d love them to release some more of his stuff.

as for recent hollywood mainstream stuff, ‘jesse james’ is superb, ‘no country for old men’, although a little too blatantly funny and CGI / model-enhanced, is a great achievement all round.

  2. I actually have been wanting to see Tokyo Trash Baby, but primarily because Kou Shibasaki is in there. I didn’t much care for Vibrator, but I plan on taking a full second look with the DVD. Haven’t seen Tattooed Flower Vase, but I might make that the next one in the review queue. I just finished Erotic Diary of an Office Lady (Should have the review posted tomorrow).

Haven’t seen Jesse James yet either, sadly. Too many other titles in my queue at the moment. Hopefully soon though.

No Country…I actually liked the humor. I think Kris and I were the only ones laughing in the theater though. Most Americans (around here at least) didn’t seem to tap into the darkly comic tone though. Lost a little bit of momentum toward the end (but not without reason), but definitely agree on the quality. What did you think of There Will Be Blood?

  3. not seen ‘there will be blood’. kind of avoided it… after ‘gangs of new york’, daniel day lewis’s performance, as i see it in the clips of this newer film that i’ve seen, looks pretty much the same. doesn’t appeal.
