Dreamlogic.net’s Ninja Favorites List

So, I’m a little late on this, but who cares? December 5th was Day of the Ninja, an effort to spread Ninja appreciation given the Pirates vs. Ninja net phenomenon. Now, I find the Pirates vs. Ninja thing to be a bit lame (I mean, c’mon. Stealthy assassins against legions of unwashed thieves and rapists? No contest there), but the whole thing allows me to put out a nice list of recommended Ninja media.

So, without further ado, my Ninja Favorites list:

Film

  • Shinobi no Mono — The first Ninja film, and still one of the best.
  • Owl’s Castle — Similar to Shinobi no Mono, Masahiro Shinoda’s Owl’s Castle is an action film depicting real ninja techniques amidst mountains of intrigue.
  • Shinobi: Heart Under Blade — Fantastical ninja masterpiece. I’ve said too much about this film as it is.
    Movie Review and DVD Review.
  • Samurai Spy — A classic Shinoda Effort, this one’s equally exciting and intriguing.
  • Kunoichi: Lady Ninja . This film’s cheesy fun. Kunoichi with superpowers team up with Jubei Yagyu to defeat an evil lord.

Anime

  • Ninja Scroll — This one needs no introduction. If you haven’t seen it, do so as soon as possible.
  • Basilisk — The same tale as Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, only more fleshed out. An awesome, intelligent, dark, and tragic series. And, if you’re interested, Amazon has the whole box set for 50% off right now.
  • Blood Omen — Ninja vs. undead demons. A lesser known, but equally cool retro animation.

Games

  • Tenchu Z — Don’t believe the naysayers. This game rocks. The gameplay is the same as old Tenchu (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?), but with huge graphical improvements. There’s nothing quite like sneaking along rooftops and descending through the rafters to execute a stealthy ninja kill. So rad. And this one’s dropped to $30 at Fry’s (Kris just got me one as a present). Pick it up!
