Kama Sutra — American Assassin — Smooth Jazz — dvd reviews

by Chris October 8, 2007

So here starts a new column at Dreamlogic.net. Sometimes we get these phantom submissions from distributors looking for us to review their titles. And sometimes these titles seem a bit out of our normal realm of coverage, even with this being Dreamlogic. So, in order to give deserving titles a fair shake without devoting an entire review, I present to you, Dreamlogic.net’s DVD Dropbox.

First up are three titles from CAV distributing, a San Francisco based DVD authoring and releasing company specializing in Educational and Hong Kong titles. I’ve previously reviewed their release of the IMAX film Vikings, so I’m guessing I’m still on their distribution list. Still, this is the oddest collection of titles I’ve ever received in a single box. These included: Kama Sutra: Essentials for Lasting Intimacy, American Assassin, and Smooth Jazz and Art.

Brought to you by Real Fun Connection, a Singaporean production company, this title is intended to teach couples how to better pleasure each other in the bedroom. It covers everything from the history of the Kama Sutra and a brief overview of possible body type matchups, to foreplay (called “preliminaries”), and finally a selection of the actual positions themselves. Being that this is a title released by CAV, the purpose first and foremost is education. There is no actual sex (the participants for the most part are generously clothed), just posing. In fact, it’s quite akin to a dance instructional — they show you the steps, and it’s left up to you to implement them. The participants aren’t exactly the most attractive things, though I wouldn’t go so far as to say they are ugly (on a side note, one of the two girls had canines as yellow as her bleached blonde hair. But thankfully her smile wasn’t in close up too often.). And again, everything was handled in a tasteful manner, so couples can watch it together. All in all this was an enlightening disc.

This documentary chronicles Lee Harvey Oswald’s little discussed years in Russia, having defected from the Unites States, in an effort to shed light on his character, and the possibility of whether he could have acted alone in the Kennedy assassination. Now, I’m not a Kennedy Assassination scholar, nor a conspiracy buff, and really don’t know too much about the event other than the odd Discovery channel documentary, but the information provided here seemed to be pretty unique. The film was shot on location in Minsk, Russia, and features interviews with people who knew Oswald at the time, as well as KGB files that have remained secret until this film’s production. The documentary is only about 72 minutes long, but I found it informative and interesting. Worth a look.

I’m a good twenty years too young to enjoy smooth Jazz, so I’m definitely the wrong audience for this one. The DVD is exactly as the title states, a series of photographs by Paul “Sequence” Ferguson, accompanied by his smooth-jazz tunes. Ferguson seems a decent photographer, and his music is okay, but nothing I’d really listen to outside the dentist’s office. Speaking of the dentist, this might be a good choice for them as the experience is pretty relaxing. I think I’ll pass this one on to my father for Christmas. Bonus points for Ferguson’s album actually being titled “Quantum Physics”

There you go. First batch of DVD Drop Box is out of the way. Stay tuned for Universal Pictures’ turn, with Cougar Club, Sun Dogs, and Nearing Grace.
