Ebert and Roeper, Now Without Thumbs

So, you’ve probably heard about Disney renegotiating Ebert’s contract pending his return to Ebert and Roeper, but you might not know about them removing the use of Ebert’s trademarked “Thumb” system. Basically Disney no longer wanted to pay Ebert for its use. You can read Ebert’s own statement about the issue here.

What I was suprised about was how fast they enacted the change. It’s not like it takes that much to stop using a sentence on a weekly show, but I figured at least Disney would allow a period of time for phasing the system out. As it is,  last night’s show featured no thumb indications whatsoever. What did they use as replacement? Nothing. Viewers will now actually have to sit through and listen to the individual reviewers to see what they thought. Could be a blessing in disguise.

It’s worth noting that Superbad was one of the last films to be given the Two Thumbs up rating.

Thanks to Gazz from Filmrot for actually alerting me to this issue in the first place.
