Peter Greenaway is one of my favorite all-time film directors and I’m extreeeemely excited about his latest film (in post production as we speak, er type), Nightwatching.
Nightwatching is a story about master painter Rembrandt and the pivotal point in his life when he becomes entangled in a political conspiracy after reluctantly taking on a commission to paint the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia. This portrait would later be named “The Nightwatch”. While attempting to reveal a murderous scheme and political kickbacks to instill power dishonestly to local merchants, Rembrandt loses his wife, his fame, his fortune.
This will be an interesting departure from Greenaway’s previous work — Nightwatching sounds almost like a biography. Gorgeous cinematography is guaranteed though. What’s equally intriguing is Rembrandt is being portrayed by Martin Freeman (pictured above left), the “Fisher Price Man”/Tim Canterbury from UK’s The Office, the “hero” in Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy and most recently in Hot Fuzz, The All Together, Dedication (with Mandy Moore and Amy Sedaris) and The Good Night (with Penelope Cruz and Gwyneth Paltrow).
You can learn more about this new Greenaway production HERE, including a thoughtfully detailed (as always) philosophically rhetorical analysis from the great Greenaway himself.

I love Peter Greenaway. By far he is one of my favorite directors. Why has he been away so long? The Pillow Book totally schooled anything released in the past 5 years!

AND! It was beautiful to watch despite ugly old Vivian Wu and Obi Wan’s mole.

Really Betty? So cool!! I rarely meet ppl who have heard of Peter Greenaway, much less seen or recognized his work.. actually scratch that.. a lot of ppl I met in Hawai’i have heard of him, even guys who’d rather watch Vin Diesel flicks at the time, but rarely here on the Mainland do I find open minded Greenaway fans — the ones that I find are sorta art snobs and won’t bother to pontificate past textbook. I must be hanging around the wrong crowds
I think Greenaway was “exhausted” after Tulse Luper Suitcases, don’t you?

That’s because people on the mainland only pay attention to Harry Potter and super heroes. I never got to see the Tulse Luper stuff. I don’t think it’s been released in the theaters or on DVD. Where can I see it?

Betty - hmm, you might be right.. America also loooves its comedies! I was alarmed when “Wild Hogs” was #1 box office for a while!
