Foster City’s Pacific Islands Festival
Posted on May 2, 2010 by Kris Nelson
Yesterday we spontaneously decided to check out Foster City’s seventh annual Pacific Islands Festival (encompassing Polynesian, New Zealand, Hawaiian cultures) on an invite from our super cool neighbor Danny. Danny’s a member of the Ho’okahi Pu’uwai Outrigger Canoe Club, who was giving free canoe rides around the lagoon for the Festival. He mentioned novice runs scheduled for tomorrow, but all online resources say the Festival was a one-day event, so sorry for the late, or non- notice there… I assumed it was all weekend.
We didn’t stay long because we to skedaddle for lunch in Redwood City, but it was a great outing with a great atmosphere. We watched alternating hula halaus of keikis and mothers in the open amphitheater, and discussed truss systems and acoustics in the enveloping sunlight. We briefly cursed our lack of cash as we swept past the food booths, fragrant with fresh sugary malasadas and charbroiled huli huli chicken.
It was a small venue, but it was free, so mark your calendars for next year!
