A new six building 110,000 square-foot Napa Valley winery which celebrated architect Frank Gehry designed for Craig and Kathryn Hall is having its official groundbreaking ceremony today. Unconventionally, the groundbreaking is taking place after initial construction has already begun. Mrs. Hall, the former U.S. ambassador to Austria, is a known avid art collector and has already gone shopping for some new items to accompany items from her personal collection to display in the visitor’s center. She says she believes the Hall St. Helena Winery will “fit in” amongst the other wineries despite Gehry’s radical design and their radical ideas on water and energy conservation. We’ll just see about that when it opens in 2009.
Having a slight ditzy moment as I thought, “screw the Berkeley Kite Festival, let’s go to Napa Valley!” Thankfully Chris set me straight, reminding me that all we’d see is dirt. Still, I’m very very excited!
