Can’t get enough Frank Miller? You won’t have to wait for long. Following the uber success of Zach Snyder’s 300 and Robert Rodriguez’ Sin City, comes Ronin. Warner Bros are steering the cash cow (inadvertent pun) for a release in 2009. Hopefully it won’t get confused with that awful movie with the otherwise delightful Jean Reno.
Ronin describes a reincarnated and dishonored 13th-century samurai soldier who is reborn in a corrupt 21st century New York rampant with mutants and evil formidable grungy types. He is given the opportunity to redeem himself by vanquishing a shape-shifting demon who murdered his master (ronin is the term for “masterless samurai” and “drifting person”). But first he must track down a special secret mystic sword. It will be directed by Sylvain White from Stomp the Yard fame.
Also watch for upcoming Sin City 2 next year and Sin City 3 shortly thereafter.
So that means another bloated violent epic without any sort of historical context whatsoever?
You know, I’m not sure if you read the whole article. This is an adaptation of a Frank Miller comic book involving a time traveling samurai. Time travel and Frank Miller. Historical accuracy? Guaranteed no. Now, I’m not at all a fan of comics. I think they’re pretty much a waste of time and money (I gave up my comic hobby back in the eighth grade). However, I will say that the Frank Miller flim adaptations so far are quite entertaining. We’ll see if this one continues that trend.
