Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star — indie in brief movie review

So we’re starting a new segment at Dreamlogic.net, reviewing short film submissions by local filmmakers. Our first Submission comes to us from San Francisco’s Jeffrey Lei. A mockumentary about a fictional Asian male porn megastar in the 1970’s titled, simply enough, Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star.

A mix of Big Foot documentary and television’s Unsolved Mysteries, the documentary covers Ho’s history in film,the attempted coverup by the porn industry, made quite uncomfortable due to the fact Ho, an Asian male, was bigger and better than the caucasian Holmes. Lei managed to get quite a few female porn stars (the only one I’ve ever heard of before is Mika Tan) to interview for the production. They pepper their fictional accounts of encounters with Ho with factual anecdotes from their “film” careers. These interviews are supplemented by archival footage of Ho (played by director Lei) in his various starring roles. These segments purposely ill-framed and artificially aged to match the sort of home-made-porn of the 1970’s. The dialogue in these sequences is quite funny, though I could have done without Lei’s actually “performing” on screen.

Now I’m not a fan of the porn film (I find the genre dreadfully boring), so I may not be the target audience for Lei’s production, but there are a few key sequences that will have you rolling on the floor, such as Ho’s walking bigfoot-like on the beach with gigantic appendage flapping freely, and the initial sequence with Ho as a pimp. That said, Dick Ho:Asian Male Porn Star has one main joke which receives endless variations, making the film seem unnecessarily long. But, somehow I think that criticism would make Mr. Ho proud. A funny, if slightly flawed effort by Jeffrey Lei.
