Gareth of sknr.net sent us this yesterday evening. It appears the new film The Island is a ripoff of an older film, Clonus, and the scriptwriters never asked the makers of the original film if they could make a remake. Kinda like Tarantino when he remade City on Fire. But unlike Ringo Lam, the original filmmakers are fighting back with a full fledged lawsuit.
Looks like Hollywood has reached another low. And they wonder people don’t think of them highly anymore….
The folks at Dreamworks are being served with legal paperwork today from the creators of the Film Clonus regarding the similarities between the films. This was sent to me today by Robert Fiveson, the Writer, Director, and Producer of the 1979 Film “Clonus”.
Below is the update I was sent today…
Thought you would appreciate knowing that today our lawyer sent a formal letter to Dreamworks accusing them of copyright infringement.
Ill keep you posted.
ROBERT FIVESON
When I asked How did it all happen, were they in talks to do a remake, did they buy the rights, or just flat out take it?
The reply was Flat out Gareth. As we say - cold cocked us.
This will be an interesting tale to follow.
Gareth

I immediately thought about the original TV movie “Clonus” when I heard about this film called The Island. The Island sounds like a complete remake with relatively few concept differences. The original TV movie was an extremely creative and novel idea. Unfortunately it was also a disappointing script and poor TV film-making, but the idea was so novel I accepted the bad TV movie. The premise of the Clonus idea is so relavant today, 26 years later, that the original TV movie becomes even more impressive in its predictive fortelling.
