So after Kris and I got back from our recent trip to Seattle I happened to render my car undriveable, exploding both right tires and denting my front rim. As such I have been driving around my sister’s old car, a red 1988 Acura with a dented hood, two broken headlights, torn seat cushions, rust spots, a cracked axle, and an engine warning light that is constantly lit.
This car doesn’t have a cd player, so I’ve been forced to listen to the radio to and from work. Not being one to bother manually setting the radio while driving, I have made do with her previous presets. Two of the stations play rap from only the least talented artists at the top of the charts, the next two channels provide more static than music, and the last two are the local alternative rock stations, Live 105, an independent San Francisco outfit, and 104.9 , a clear channel defecation.
Not finding anything on the goodness that is the Live, I switched to 104.9 and heard some no talent act redoing Bowie’s Under Pressure. The high pitched nasally vibratto of the annoying singer, and unoffensive, and particularly unimpressive guitars could belong to Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, or any number of the bands that play on CMC these days. As the song finished the radio station played it’s catchline “Channel 104.9, your new music alternative.” Amazingly, the channel has no qualms about the quality of the artists it plays. As one of the few stations still refusing to burn their Creed CD’s, at least they proudly proclaim their station is the station to listen to when you don’t want to be bothered with music.
Channel 104.9, I salute you for your brutal honesty. At that moment, stuck in traffic on the 85 in a car I wouldn’t want to be recognized in, you brightened my day.
