Knocked Up — guest movie review — screener!

by Chris and Kris April 20, 2007

We’ve received another guest review, this time courtesy of Craig Merry, upstanding citizen and longtime friend of Dreamlogic.net. I know a lot of you out there are probably fans of either The 40 Year-Old Virgin or Freaks and Geeks, and therefore are interested in seeing this film. I know I am. Without further ado, on to Craig’s review.

dreamlogic.net -- Knocked Up -- guest movie review -- screener! My assumption just from the title, Knocked Up, was that it was another teen sex comedy. But, like “40-year old virgin”, I was surprised at the depth of the plot. The main character is Ben, your stereotypical 24 year-old Canadian pothead who’s been living on $14k for the past ten years and lives with his buddies while trying to launch a new website on boobs in movies. Alison is a super hot workaholic E channel host who happens to live in her sister’s pool house while been teased about her non-sex-life. Add the smooth move of buying beer for her and her sister, and non-verbal communication about the need for a rubber, and a decent start to a “romantic-comedy”.

The situations that the main characters faced seemed like problems I face on a near daily basis and now I can say “see, this is what most guys think” to my girlfriend. Yeah, she’s stubborn but she probably understands me more now because of this movie. I just re-read over what I just wrote, and it sounds sad but I mean to say that the viewpoint of the characters enhances your argument on why the male (or female) might resist going into marriage or having a baby. I would re-title this movie: “why guys get scared of the responsibility of having babies and marriage”. Even if the woman is super hot, the same fears are still there. Note to guys: in the bar scene when Ben picks up the super hot woman, your jaw will drop. Mine did. I just hope my girlfriend didn’t see it. Judging from the lack of an elbow into the ribcage, she was transfixed to the screen — Big theatre screen for you-know-what. Shortly after this a nice bare, big, hairy ass will stimulate your senses.

The style of direction was nice and kept the pace of the movie going. At some points, I wanted to the movie to speed up a little bit. It clocks in at just over two hours. But it’s not a big deal, the movie gets back into the story quickly and it’s enjoyable for a lot of people. Without a doubt, you will laugh. If you don’t, you must’ve had a strange childhood or you lived in the North Pole with some polar bears. I definitely would watch this movie for 10 bucks a pop.
