MOVIE TRAILERS . Nana 2, Smoking Aces, Curse of the Golden Flower, Ô-oku, Paprika and more

It’s time for another trailer rundown.

Nana 2 . The next installment of the rock drama starring Japanese pop star Mika Nakashima. I haven’t yet seen Nana 1, but Nakashima’s actually a pretty good singer, so I am somewhat interested. Trailer here.

Smoking Aces . The latest in hitmen comedy, Smoking Aces looks about as fun as it is violent. The film’s being hyped enough as it is at other sites, so I’ll just leave it at that. Trailer here.

Curse of the Golden Flower . Yet another trailer. I still maintain that everything here has a been there done that sort of feel. The only things truly different are starring turns by Chow Yun Fat’s hair and Gong Li’s cleavage. Latest trailer here.

Ô-oku: The Movie. The latest film starring Yukie Nakama (Shinobi, G@me) is a period drama. I’m not familiar with the story of Ô-oku, but if this trailer is any indicator you can expect romance and mystery, with a lot of walking and dramatic looks. Trailer here. Official site here(it’s actually kinda cool).

Sakuran. A period drama, based on a manga, focusing on a young oiran (not geisha. prostitute) in Edo Japan. The film looks to be quite beautiful, with a color scheme that gives Curse of the Golden Flower a run for its money, and a healthy dose of eroticism. Take that, Memoirs. Trailer here. Official site here.

Tekkon. A new anime by one of the producers and visual effects designers of The Animatrix, and the writer of Ping Pong. Looks pretty interesting. Trailer here.

Paprika. Kris and I love Satoshi Kon. Love his work. There are two trailers up for his latest, which you can check out here. The film’s getting a lot of press over at Twitch (which first alerted me to the film), so make sure to go read up.

  1. I want to see Smokin Aces right now! IS that really Alecia Keys? That Sadako movie looks good to!

  2. Hey guys. Just saw “Curse of the Golden Flower,” and quite liked it. There are enough martial-arts squirmishes to satisfy the people who think that’s what’s Zhang Yimou is all about, but it’s actually pretty different from “Hero” or “House of Flying Daggers.” I thought it had closer ties to “Raise the Red Lantern” and even “Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.” I’m saving the details for my review, but do check it out.

  3. Hey Fernando. Interesting, but I seem to remember you liking House of Flying Daggers quite a bit….which Kris and I did not. The verdict is still out for us, but I would say it’s the film on this list we are least looking forward to.
