Calpico Soda — munchies review

dreamlogic.net's MUNCHIES . Calpico Grape and RegularCalpis Co., Ltd is a well-known Japanese soft drink mogul, despite their highly unappetizing name* and proven efforts in creating actual health sustaining fluids such as AmealPeptide, which counteracts hypertension. They have a milky white beverage that resembles diluted milk because that’s exactly what it is, and is even called Calpis Water. It’s a simple concoction of water, nonfat dry milk, and lactic acid, creating a slightly bitter yogurt-drink sensation. Calpis Water is also available with a variety of tropical fruit boosts, such as mango and pineapple.

If the notion of drinking that mixture sounds even more unappetizing than the company name, never fear. The good people of Calpis also give us Calpico Soda, which is the whitish water mixed with fruit flavors and is (duh) carbonated. To me it’s more palatable and not as bland. Although I seriously am not a fan of soda or that slick film of processed liquid sugar that clings to my gums after downing a glass/can, I have to praise the Grape Calpico Soda because it tastes like that cheap godawful grape flavored soda we all raided and traded for in our childhood.

To be perfectly honest, I bought it for the cute bright colored cans with cute phonetic fruit titles such as “stroberi” in goofy pink and because I couldn’t find the other foul sounding Japanese drink, Pocari Sweat (review to come).

*The name “Calpis” is a melding of calcium + sarpis (Sanskrit for “yummy”).
