Tired of all the posh snobbery and “clean” places to eat in the City? Want a place that’s just as gaudy on the inside as on the outside? Check it out: pastel “Easter” pink with marshmallow peanut orange trim opens up to cracked leather turquoise booths. Ooh, appetizing already. Chris and I had a hankering for pie and onion rings (our usual diner trial foods) so we couldn’t help it. I had the pecan pie w/ whipped cream and Chris had the cherry pie ala mode. Low on presentation, the whipped cream is sprayed on and the ice cream is paddled on like a flat brick. The cherries were from a can and the pecans were few and far between, but the
crust was okay, a bit thick on the Crisco, but okay. The onion rings were crunchy and greasy enough to both satisfy and quese-ify, like most any fried finger food, nothing special there.
I would only think about going here in the wee hours when you really don’t want to go home yet and you also think that 24-hour place in downtown is too expensive and Denny’s is too racist or you can’t find parking at Sparky’s, Bagdad’s, Mel’s, and Orphan Andy’s, but if you just want some 24-hour pie, maybe go to Safeway instead of this place.
