Red Coconut Balls — munchies review — Hawai’i

dreamlogic.net's MUNCHIES . Red Coconut BallsI love coconut. Co-co-nut. But I never thought I’d like it formed into bite-sized balls rolled in sugar and dyed a bright crayola red. It’s dewy and chewy in the center with a crispy coating of gravelly granulated sugar. Because the candies are held together with corn syrup, and corn syrup and sugar come before coconut (unsweetened coconut mind you) on the ingredients list, I don’t have to tell you this is a sickeningly sweet treat. It makes me cringe just thinking about it. But not so much that I’ll stop eating it, hehe.

I’m not sure why it has to come in toxic neon colors (it also is available in snow pee yellow) but maybe it’s because coconut is so neutral and it just sucks up food dye, making vibrant possible (think hot pink coconut on Hostess Snoballs). I’m sure someone somewhere has to make these in natural whitest white; that would be almost too postmodern to eat! Almost.
