New Year, New Shows

by Chris January 15, 2008

As you probably already know, Kris and I don’t really watch television shows, but this year I’m actually trying to take advantage of some bite-sized entertainments. And, so far, some have actually proven entertaining. So, here’s a quick rundown of things I’ve been taking a look at.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
You’re probably already watching this one, so I’ll skip the intro. Suffice it to say, I’m impressed. The show’s a bit spotty pacewise, and Lena Heady is darn terrible as Sarah Connor, but on the whole the series so far has been loads better than Terminator 3 (Thank god they’re ignoring that film’s oh-so-stupid storyline). Be sure to check out Kris’s Separated at Birth article.

Cutie Honey The Live . Okay, so this one’s not new, but I decided to give it a second go round this new year. Things got quite repetitious in the last few episodes I watched, but the introduction of a new female adversary might make the series pick up again. I’m way behind though, so this might take most of the year to catch up (I’m slow with TV shows). Check out my original Cutie Honey The Live article.

Nova . I’m making a concerted effort to watch this show this year. It’s far more educational than the cable fluff (see: recent Discovery Channel and TLC shows), and there’s a new scientific topic each week. Tonight has a continuation of last week’s Absolute Zero episode (which was completely fascinating), and should be quite interesting even if you haven’t seen the first half.

Rosario + Vampire . This is an anime my friend sent my way, and is currently airing in Japan. It concerns a teenaged human attending a highschool for yokai, due to a small paperwork mix up. There he gets wrapped up with a vampire girl who immediately falls in love with him due to his uber-tasty blood. There are only two episodes so far, but the animation is quite impressive. The pastel backdrops are fleshed out with impressive computer assisted perspectives, and the character designs are ultra detailed, and smootly animated. Too bad the story’s not so hot, and the rampant fan serivice borders on ecchi. Seriously, the first episode had Rosario (the main female vampire vampire) looking like Tom Brokaw’s secret fantasy after a chance meeting with a drooling orc. Still, there’s room to grow. Check out the wikipedia page and some download links. *UPDATE* Seen most of episode two now, and it’s on even worse behavior than the first. To think that Capcom has helped produce this….Not sure I’m gonna see this one out.

Jeopardy . Our favorite show, hands down. This isn’t new either, but we kinda lost the routine over Christmas break.
