Oh wow! Cutie Honey The Live!

by Chris and Kris November 2, 2007

No, it’s not a typo. It’s the live action television show of Go Nagai’s Cutie Honey! Now, Cutie Honey The Movie was easily one of my favorite superhero films of the past few years. It was tongue in cheek, but sweet, action packed, and a whole lot of fun. While the show stars Mikie Hara instead Eriko Sato (Carved: The Slit Mouthed Woman), it still looks to maintain the same feel, albeit with a little less freaky set of Tiger Claw minions. The show officially started in Japan just last month, so it should be a while before any version of the show hits stateside. FanSubbers, I’m counting on you.

If you’re not at all familiar with Cutie Honey, check out my review of the film, or this rather wonky Google translation from the show’s official site:

UPDATE

I’ve now seen three episodes of Cutie Honey The Live, and I’ve got to admit, it’s pretty fun. Sure, I have my share of complaints: Mikie Hara’s no Eriko Sato — something about the pink wig in conjunction with her face makes her look quite a bit older than she is (Kris said she looks like a housewife with it on). Furthermore, her Honey’s quite a bit more naive and shrill than previous incarnations of the cybernetic Cutie. And, at least so far, the episodes tend to be a bit formulaic, with the final fights in each featuring Honey getting her butt kicked in the same plaza locale (notice the checkered steps). But, on the whole, I think the show’s onto something good. Unlike many of the current American superhero films and shows Cutie Honey The Live is refreshingly tongue in cheek. It’s bite sized (23-minute) episodes feature a nice mix of both stupid and ribald humor, as well as decent hand to hand combat (Mikie Hara seems to be doing a fair amount of stunt-work…though it could be a double). It’s not exactly original, but it’s certainly entertaining.
