Over the years, people have auctioned off their virginity, their foreheads, food with sacrilegious caricatures, Princess Amidala’s underpants… a recently divorced man even put his “life” up for bid. The latest two big bid bonanzas aren’t as radical, but they are for good causes.
The 90-foot tall Original Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park in Santa Monica is up for grabs until April 25th. The opening bid was $50,000, the original cost was $800,000. It was the world’s first solar-powered Ferris Wheel when its power was adapted in late 1998, which is super cool. Half of the proceeds will go to the LA Region of the Special Olympics. This, curiously, is for the wheel only and not the wheel base. Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’…
The Boston Red Sox jersey that was recently excavated from the new Yankee stadium is also up for bid with little bits of concrete clinging to the “cursed” clothing. Bidding began at $500 and has quickly spiked to the current $33,100 with 105 bids. All proceeds will go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. The tattered threads will be presented at a Red Sox game and enclosed in a glass case with this posted disclaimer/instruction: “[w]e do not encourage the actual use of the shirt”. Fair enough.
