I love handing these out. When my friend passed one to a co-worker in his dept., I could hear cries of “it burns.. it burrrrns!” from my desk. The “burrrn” is thanks to sodium bicarbonate or baking soda to chemistry-phobes. What?! Baking soda in a candy? Well, the transluscent aqua orbs are actually a re-inactment of the fun ultra-fizzy soft drink from Japan where a little skill* is involved in getting to it.
As you hold it on your tongue, it’ll tickle and bubble. Challenge yourself to how much tickling you can stand. Try not to crunch it, unless you’re the impatient type (like me) who bites through Sour Lemons et al to get to the perky powder. It’s strange because you’d think it would taste like Alka Seltzer, but it so doesn’t. It’s sweet and tangy and before you know it, a whole bag will disappear. You’re going to want to share the burn with your friends too.
* The Ramune bottle houses delicious citrusy soda which is unlocked with a special plastic “key” shaped like a round hollow peg. You place the peg in the grooves of the bottle opening, hovering over a suspended marble just below the liquid’s surface. Slamming your fist down on the peg’s flat head releases the internal pressure, it pops and the marble drops. Dodge any dribble, enjoy yummy soda and save the bottle for a trippy vase.
