LOS ANGELES, CA - On Friday, March 17, 2006, the Los Angeles Korean Cultural Center — with the support of Los Angeles Korean International Film Festival (LAKIFF) — will present Mora Mi-Ok Stephens’ feature directorial debut, CONVENTIONEERS, which had its Los Angeles premiere at the LAKIFF 2005. On March 4, 2006 Ms. Stephens won one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry — the Independent Spirit Awards’ John Cassavetes Award for best feature made for under $500,000. This year’s Independent Spirit Awardees include Oscar Winners Ang Lee, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Crash, Capote and Brokeback Mountain. You are cordially invited to the screening to celebrate with us.

    Title: CONVENTIONEERS
    Director: Mora Mi-Ok Stephens
Screenplay: Mora Mi-Ok Stephens & Joel Viertel
Cast: Matthew Mabe, Woodwyn Koons, Alek Friedman
    Year of Production: 2005
    Running Time: 98 min

“Filmed clandestinely during the convention, CONVENTIONEERS’ guerrilla, semi-documentary style provides a vivid look at an event that gripped New York City, and the at-times violent passions the convention triggered. Stephen’s team were so near the action, both in and outside the event, that the filming resulted in arrests (and detentions of up to 41 hours) for members of the crew. Verité performances keep the characters’ motives edgy and unpredictable, lending a tension that the outcome of the convention itself never had. Called “a blue-state red-state ROMEO AND JULIET-style love story” by the Tribeca Film Festival, CONVENTIONEERS is also one of the best films made about New York City today, its passions, its people, and its divisions.”
