Stop the Presses! Genuine Midnight Movies playing in San Jose?

The past few years worth of Midnite Movie offerings at the Camera Theaters in San Jose have been nothing short of laughable. Sixteen Candles and Super Troopers? Please. If I can see the film on weekend mid morning cable, it’s assuredly not Midnight Movie fare. Thankfully the Camera Cinemas have shaken the know-nothing-hipster KSCU organizers of previous years and replaced them with more knowledgeable parties at the Silicon Valley Metro. Sure, there are still some questionable mainstream picks, a la Corpse Bride (we’d rather see some Svankmajer or Brothers Quay), but the overall lineup is much improved. Take Plan 9 from Outer Space, Monster Squad, and Evil Dead II for instance. Heck, I’d even be interested in catching the midnight screening of Verhoven’s masterwreck, Showgirls.

The full lineup is as follows:

  • May 25-27–VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOOD LUST (2000 anime “classic” [Chris: the original, yes, this one, no.])
  • June 1-3–Ed Wood’s PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959)
  • June 9-10–MONSTER SQUAD (C7/C12 Only)
  • June 15-17–THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)
  • June 22-24–THE BOONDOCK SAINTS (1999)
  • June 29-July 1–Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD II (1987)
  • July 7-8–PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST (C7/C12 only)
  • July 13-15–Paul Verhoeven’s SHOWGIRLS (1995)
  • July 20-22–Bruce Lee in ENTER THE DRAGON (1973)
  • July 27-29–PINK FLOYD THE WALL (1982)
  • August 3-5–TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1990)
  • August 10-12–Tim Burton’s CORPSE BRIDE (2005)
  • August 18-19–CLERKS II (C7/C12 only)
  • August 24-26–TRON (1982)

Like I said, overall it’s not a bad start. Note to Metro organizers, next time, how about we get a little more Jim Kelly action. Say, Black Belt Jones?

Now if only they could fix Cinequest…..
