So way back 6 months or-so ago I answered a question on Stack Overflow regarding the best films about Geeks/Hackers/Programmers. My answer was a bit obscure and outlandish, so it was never upvoted, but I felt it worth a mention here, along with some other awesome coding movies.
So, without further ado, three awesome films about Programmers/Hackers/Geeks

Clint Howard is a nerd at a military academy. He’s picked on by bullies morning, noon, and night…that is, until he contacts Satan on his IBM Compatible 286!!!! Bloody revenge in the monochrome era. Highly …

Craig Merry’s back with another guest review! I haven’t had the time or interest to see the new Star Trek picture, but he just might have swayed me. Read on for his review.
Not too long ago I was sitting in “Watchmen” and saw the trailer for Star Trek. My brother was in awe and gave that elbow rub in the rib cage. He wanted to see it. Me, not so much. The first and last episode I watched was when I was 10, and it bored me to tears. For …

This being April Fool’s Day, I know nothing I post today is really going to be taken seriously, but honest to god, Cat Shit One is real. It’s a new cg-anime production that sees cute little bunny rabbits engaging in covert operations in the middle east. Don’t believe me? Have a look at the Youtube video below. Also, check out the official site. [via]
And I thought I’d seen everything…

I just received another big batch of titles (Shuffle, Black Blood Bros, and more), so I’ll just take care of some of my pending reviews in one fell swoop. I’ll be back with a full review of Glass Fleet vol 6 in the coming weeks. On to the reviews.
School Rumble vol. 6
After seeing the incredibly funny vol. 5, you could say I was looking forward to seeing the final disc of School Rumble. In fact, I did a little digging to get a little more info regarding the …

(If you haven’t already, please check out my previous reviews of the Witchblade Anime, volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
First off, I made a mistake. Looking at the number of discs in my Witchblade box set, and the amount of space available as of disc 5, I figured there would be two more volumes of the show. Not so. The extra gap was only intended to …

Director: Ryuichi Honda
Starring: Kei Mizutani, Nao Iguchi
Genre: Indie, Bad Ass Chicks, Japan, Action
Let’s start with the positives first. I think, outside of experimental art and music DVDs, Operation Pussycat boasts THE best DVD cover art of the past few years. It’s simple, clean, instantly catches your eye… It just pops. Cult DVD distributors would do well to follow its example (here’s looking at you, Discotek Media). As for the film contained within this awesome cover….well, let’s just say, you would think a Russ Meyer homage …

Given the progressive increase in quality and intensity of story and action across the four previous volumes of Witchblade anime, you would think Volume 5 would be nothing short of mindblowing (If you haven’t already, please check out my previous reviews of the witchblade volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4).The last disc alone saw the death of Lady, the reuniting of Masane and Rihoko, and the emergence of the first real threat to Masane’s safety in the form of a very very scary clone-blade, Maria. And given all the pent …

First things first, if you haven’t viewed Witchblade Vol. 3 yet, you might want to skip this review. The episodes presented here are impossible to talk about without spoiling the end of that last disc.
Still with me? Okay. Let’s move on.
Picking up exactly where the 12th episode ended, Witchblade Vol. 4 sees child services attempting to take Rihoko away from Masane and deliver her to her biological mother. Masane makes a short lived attempt at hiding Riko, but eventually caves in following a Cloneblade attack that puts Riko in danger. …

So, I’ve now seen Witchblade Volume 2. In my review of the previous disc I was a little nonplussed with the series, but intended to withhold judgment until I saw at least the second disc. And now that I have, does the future of Witchblade look any brighter?
Note: If you haven’t already, go back and check out that review here.
Second Note: I will be updating this article with screencaps shortly.
This second disc of Witchblade sees Masane taking on more tasks for Douji Group Industries (I didn’t mention these guys …

First off, I must admit I have no prior experience with Witchblade other than a small Tomb Raider and Witchblade comic book I received way back in high school. I remember something regarding her being a treasure hunting aristocrat, somewhat like Lara Croft, and possessing some power that made some funky skimpy armor appear on her body, but other than that I had no idea as to what the character was, how she came to be, or what she stood for.
That said, I’ve learned quite a bit from …

…and a little more catch up. Reviews for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and, in preparing for the upcoming San Francisco screening of Postal, Uwe Boll’s BloodRayne. Enjoy.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society . How’s that for the longest title of the year? GitS:SAC:SSS is the third Ghost in the Shell film, and the first involving the world of the Stand Alone Complex series. For those of you not in the know Stand …

In the past few years AnimEigo has restored and released all the Lone Wolf and Cub films, even going so far as to use their restored footage to manually reassemble a restored version of Shogun Assassin. Now, with Shogun Assassin 2: Lightning Swords of Death, their Lone Wolf and Cub collection is complete (that is, unless they decide to take on the television show). Keeping with the spirit of Ogami Itto, I’m going to make this review direct, and to the point.
First and foremost, let me clear up a bit …

I’m back with some brief takes on recent flicks. This time we have one worth seeing, and one worth skipping at all costs. Enjoy!
Idiocracy
I love the message of Mike Judge’s Idiocracy, but it is quite the tiring watch. Luke Wilson (the handsome Wilson) plays an army librarian chosen to participate in a military cryogenics experiment. It’s only supposed to last a month, but the experiment goes wrong and he wakes up in the 31st century, where years of babysitter lawmaking, rampant commercialism, and anti-intellectual pop culture have reduced the American …

In an effort towards catching up, here are a few more capsule reviews. Note that we do have some full reviews in the queue, including Brick, Chiseen,The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai, and Stereo Future. On to the capsules:
Beerfest . Holy crap! A Broken Lizard film that’s actually funny! Okay, so Super Troopers had a few choice moments (“Afhanistanimation”), but Club Dread was absolute garbage and Dukes of Hazzard left quite a bit to be desired. What a nice surprise it was that Beerfest delivered laughs throughout. The tale of …

Tom Yum Goong
Goddammit! Someone has stolen Tony Jaa’s elephants! Now he must fly to Australia to rescue the purloined pachyderms and, with his trademark flying elbows, knees, and crazy stunts, kick the asses of the persons responsible. The story has sort of a retro-cheap, slapped together sort of feel; quite like the Cinemax-grade actioners of the 1980s. You know, the kind whose biggest stars would be Eric Roberts and some anonymous breasts. It’s quite drawn out, and it’s overly serious gangland drama, dramatic as it is ludicrous, had me eyeing …

HE SAID: Admittedly, after watching the Bourne Identity, I wasn’t really that concerned whether there was a sequel or not. Sure, the film was interesting, and far more intelligent than your average action-espionage flick, but there wasn’t really anything that left me wanting more. So, in approaching the new-Bourne, I was firmly grounded in a state of indifference. Thankfully, the Bourne Supremacy fixes most of the shortcomings of the previous film, delivering a tighter narrative, and a far more interesting Bourne.
BS (heh heh) starts a few years after the …
