Gorgeous footage from the glorious metro hub of Tokyo, emphasizing the anonymity, technology, beauty, even poverty (homeless) that exemplifies any major city, utilizing meticulously crisp pacing and stylistic editing and filmic techniques. By divulging unfamiliar lesser known areas of the city, Alone in Tokyo inadvertently invites us to familiarize ourselves with the highlighted strangers.
Ethereal blippy music from Air (track: “Alone in Kyoto”) doesn’t hurt, either.

This past Wednesday I finally saw Kenta Fukasaku’s epic fail, X-Cross. Now, I’ve heard that the film was bad from sources like Twitch, but even with lowered expectations I wasn’t prepared for just how truly terrible the film is.
For those not in the know, X-Cross is a pseudo-horror/comedy concerning a pair of girls (Nao Matsushita and pop-star Ami Suzuki) whose hot springs trip turns into a struggle for their lives…and limbs. You see, the townspeople who run the hot springs are a superstitious sort, with a long-standing tradition of ...

So the past week’s Valentine’s Day celebration has seen two excellent additions to our Wii library. The first, Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams, I’m currently working on (Kris already beat it this weekend!), and hope to review in the near future. The second, and the subject of this article, Shiren The Wanderer, is a little less visible a title, but no less worthy for it.
Now, I’ve only just started Shiren the Wanderer, so I can’t possibly review the title, but what I’ve seen was pretty impressive, and worth calling attention to. ...

Kris and I have been addicted to Kou Shibasaki’s song,KISSして all weekend. It’s on her Single Best CD, and pretty much the only KOH+ song on there (apparently the name she uses for harder rocking songs and collaborative efforts [this one a collaboration with Masaharu Fukuyama]). Still, it’s a pretty good album all around, and totally worth picking up.
But back to the song. I like it so much, I figured I might as well share:

You know, all the “Chu chu chu” lyrics reminded me a bit of Space Channel 5:

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne is a tricky little title to review — it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s an Ero Guro detective story incorporating elements of Norse mythology and super-powered immortals, peppered with gore-soaked fights, and substantial amounts sexual deviancy. It’s a title I would recommend only for adult adults – let’s say 25 and up. The goings on here are probably just plain too strange for anyone with fewer years under their belt.
Now, I’ve reviewed Ero Guro films before, but you anime fans might not be that familiar with ...

Over the Christmas break I watched part of a strange little anime series called Battle Programmer Shirase. The series caught my eye because, as wildy varied as anime titles tend to be, I have never come across an anime show with a programmer protagonist. Ever.
And, to be completely honest, I still haven’t with Battle Programmer. As far as the world of the series sees it, “programmer” is as much synonymous with code-author as white-hat hacker. The Battle Programmer of the title is an elite coder/hacker/technology enthusiast, whose 1337 skills see ...

A few months back I posted my review of the theatrical release of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. As you might recall, I was less than enthused with what I saw. Still, I thought it might be good to go back and revisit the original series, and see exactly how the story was originally presented, and thus, what, if anything, was particularly novel about 1.0’s re-visitation (Note: Yes, the DVD is called Evangelion 1.01, but for convenience’s sake, I’ll just continue with 1.0).
