It’s phresh without that pesky refresh. Realtime commenting WITHIN your gmail with friends or strangers. A quick photo flipbook that is super similar to FriendFeed. Open APIs hoping to squash “locked” social sites like Facebook. An Orkut redemption sequel. A Google Wave precedent. A name that already exists over at Yahoo… it is Google Buzz.

According to project manager Todd Jackson, the five major features of Google Buzz are:

Auto-following
Rich, fast sharing experience (quick photo flipbook)
Public and private sharing (public by default, kinda sucky, imo)

I viewed some screenshots of the big Google user experience redesign back last November, but I wasn’t sure if it was kosher to post about it then, and I was just a little skeptical. Well, maybe not skeptical, but surprised.
Google (and Google fans) have always been keen on simplicity, speed, and speed. Would they really add icons to their crisp SRP (Search Results Page)? Yes, and they are doing it Yahoo! style (we used image sprites — Chris informed me those were originally used for ...

And after the launch, yes, the jokes were flying everywhere; suddenly even hardcore Apple fans were quick to hurtle and hurl insults.
Sure, it doesn’t support multitasking, Flash, 3G (until April, available w/ Wi-Fi in March)… (Chris is miffed that it’s LED not EPD, but ppl want to read color and solely indoors, apparently) taking a tumble to prehistoric “(powder-coated aluminum) coaster” status, ...

eBay is finally offloading Skype, the thorn in their side since they acquired it in 2005 for $3.1 billion. When I was at eBay, I heard an external rumor that Google was considering the purchase; news that shocked my co-workers.
It seems Google was shopping for Skype again last month, but the big G “ultimately walked away from a potential deal, fearing that continued litigation could leave it vulnerable to immense damages”, a source briefed on the negotiations declared. “Google also worried that owning Skype might alienate ...

China’s giant pandas face extinction soon
There are only 1590 wild pandas and 180 captive-bred bears left in China. And they just will not mate. Conservationists have attempted to boost libido and encourage mating with “panda porno” videos and “sexercises” to strengthen the male’s leg muscles.
Besides increased susceptibility to diseases and natural disasters like last year’s big earthquake, highway construction and inbreeding are true turn-offs. “We may have to give up building some infrastructure,” Fan Zhiyong, the WWF species program director suggests. Urban development forces ...

Wolfgang Petersen is making a live-action Paprika. I heard about this earlier in the month, but am still in shock. The famed director of Das Boot, The Perfect Storm, Troy, Air Force One, Outbreak is working on a live-action rendition of the amazing anime Paprika. Maybe he has more in common with Satoshi Kon than I initially gave him credit for: they both excel at cataclysmic epics. Yet, I wonder why mess with a good thing?

Disney has recently acquired the rights to film The Diary of Anne Frank and they’ve chose oft potty-mouthed Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet to write and direct the new version.
Drawing reference from the original play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, and of course the legendary diary, Mamet will re-tell the tale of the spry Jewish German lass who hid in a secret room in the attic of her father’s office building in Amsterdam with her sister and parents, later joined by the van Pels family and another family friend. ...
