Without further ado, Dreamlogic.net’s Favorite Entertainments of 2009.

The Box – Richard Kelly’s latest struck just the right balance of creepy and philosophical. The adaptation of Richard Matheson’s short-story meditation on ethics and altruism, ‘Button Button’, is as smart as it is engaging; more than making up for ...

I’m a fan of Zatoichi. I’m not a hardcore fan — I’ve seen a handful of the films, and nothing of the television series — but a fan nonetheless. So, when I heard about this reboot/re-imagining/continuation of the Zatoichi series, I figured it might be worth a look. And once I saw the promotional stills, I actually found myself looking forward to viewing it.
Let’s just say, I’ve learned my lesson.
Like Batgirl to Batman, Ichi sees the first effort toward making a female protagonist take up the mantle of the blind ...

Earlier this year Iain Stott of the One-Line Review challenged a group of over 150 internet film critics to help come up with a list of the top 100 films not on standard best-of cinema lists (Your usual Goddard and Truffaut staples were almost completely off limits). Kris and I were lucky enough to be two of the participants, and after months of deliberation and voting, the results have finally been posted. The lists from everyone proved wildly diverse, with each participant submitting up to 100 films for consideration, and ...

Given the number of articles previously published at this site, the recent release of the Afro Samurai video game (complete with giant, billboard advertisements), and the fact that this is a sequel, I think I can forego the usual introductory paragraph. Suffice it to say, Afro Samurai’s back and looking better than ever.
The last go round with Afro saw him climbing the headband ladder to avenge the death of his father. Resurrection picks up a few years later, with Afro still ...

Shogun Assassin 5-Film Collector’s Set. By far, the easiest review I’ve ever done. Chris has done all the dirty work already with his awesome reviews of the rogue ronin Ogami Itto and his impossibly adorable son Daigoro, so all that’s left for me to do is reveal the special features.
You’ll find program notes (brief description), an image gallery slideshow, DVD credits, audio commentary with film scholar Ric Meyers and martial arts expert Steve Watson.
An interview with dub director Scott Houle describes the tedious process of dubbing voice-overs, adding ...

Freesia: Icy Tears (aka: Freesia: Bullets over Tears) . It’s the old samurai-western feedback-loop, but with a dash of Sci-Fi for good measure. In Freesia’s near-future Japan, all litigation has been eschewed in favor of hands-on acts of vengeance. Persons expressing a grievance are assigned a posse of professional ...

So, after our reviews of the previous four Shogun Assassin DVDs, I’m pretty sure you know what to expect with Shogun Assassin 5: Cold Road to Hell: loads of awesome swordfights, tricked out machine gunning baby-carriage antics, and more arterial spray than you can shake a stick at. Only, there’s one small difference. This time around Ogami Itto and Daigoro take on a number of supernatural baddies, as well as finally taking on the dastardly ...

Koreeda Hirokazu is the master of the saccharine. The man has managed to tackle such subjects ranging from dealing with the suicide of a spouse (Maborosi) to the prospect of life after death (After Life), and in each instance, rather than depressing the audience, he has somehow managed to lift their spirits. His latest, Hana (Flower), is no do different. With its tale of peace over revenge, Hirokazu yet again demonstrates an adept and skilled director, producing ...

This film has been covered ad-nauseum on other websites, so I’ll make this relatively short. For those of you not in the know, Sukiyaki Western Django is Takashi Miike’s Japanese western. Now, each and every film student knows about the interplay between the American Western and the Japanese Samurai, but a full on Japanese western is pretty unusual. While the mash-up has been tested in the realm of videogames (ie: Rising Zan and Samurai Western), ...
