SFX artist Yoshihiro Nishimura and screenwriter Kengo Kaji (Tokyo Gore Police, Eko Eko Azark 3) are at it again, this time with a tale of a female Samurai doll who exacts vengeance via her eleven deadly weapons, concealed, naturally, within her flesh. Expect another dose of ultra-weird body modifications, projectile flesh, and ultraviolent absurdity.

Given the number of articles previously published at this site, the recent release of the Afro Samurai video game (complete with giant, billboard advertisements), and the fact that this is a sequel, I think I can forego the usual introductory paragraph. Suffice it to say, Afro Samurai’s back and looking better than ever.
The last go round with Afro saw him climbing the headband ladder to avenge the death of his father. Resurrection picks up a few years later, with Afro still …

So, after our reviews of the previous four Shogun Assassin DVDs, I’m pretty sure you know what to expect with Shogun Assassin 5: Cold Road to Hell: loads of awesome swordfights, tricked out machine gunning baby-carriage antics, and more arterial spray than you can shake a stick at. Only, there’s one small difference. This time around Ogami Itto and Daigoro take on a number of supernatural baddies, as well as finally taking on the dastardly …

So if you check out this site, and you’ve read my reviews of Shogun Assassin 2 and Shogun Assassin 3, you know what to expect from Shogun Assassin 4: Five Fistfuls of Gold. Yup, Shogun Assassin 4 is the dubbed version of the fifth Lone Wolf and Cub film, Baby Cart in the Land of Demons. If you’ve seen that film, there’s nothing new to see here. If not, read on.
This fifth outing (or fourth, depending on if you started with Sword of Vengeance or Shogun Assassin) sees Ogami …

If there’s one thing Zombie films have long neglected, it’s zombie schoolgirls. You would think the loose-socked lot would be a natural host for the zombie apocalypse, given their somewhat valid stereotypes of superficiality, given their youthful self-obsession, blind adherence to fads, and susceptibility to peer pressures, but it took thirty-three years from Romero’s Night of the Living Dead before someone actually stumbled across the idea.
In fact, it is Naoyuki Tomomatsu’s 2001 picture, Stacy, that sees this rather novel idea made flesh. And an admirable attempt it is. But, …

Wow. Is Halloween really in only two days? I meant to put up this Halloween list earlier, but at least we’ve got 48 hours.
Previous Dreamlogic.net Halloween lists have covered a lot of our cult and personal favorites, and with each subsequent year it becomes harder and harder to come up with a list that doesn’t repeat itself. This year, rather than going completely niche, we’ve assembled a list of recent favorites as well as personal guilty pleasures. You can find the previous years’ lists here and here.

I know what you’re thinking. “Wait. What? Shogun Assassin 3? I’ve heard of one and two, but three? Am I missing something here?” No, you’re not crazy. Technically Shogun Assassin 3: Slashing Blades of Carnage is brand new, a freshly dubbed version of Lone Wolf and Cub 4: Baby Cart in Peril, brought about by a supposed demand on the part of dub loving viewers. If you’ve seen Lone Wolf and Cub 4 before, there’s nothing new to see here. If not, read on.
By now you probably are familiar with …

Murder Party
SHE SAID:
Somewhere there is a man who looks like Chris Elliot, but you will actually care if he dies. Chris Sharp plays Christopher S. Hawley, a totally blah, totally random alprazolam-popping traffic cop whose sorry socialization solely involves interactions with his cat. One Halloween, when the battle for the armchair is again lost to said cat, Chris’ video marathon is thwarted and he decides to uncharacteristically trek out to a mysterious “Murder Party” after claiming a discarded invitation on the sidewalk. In a nifty silent montage, we see his …

Directed by Kei Fujiwara (Organ), Id is a an avant-garde exploration of the darker corners of the human psyche, of rage, madness, lust, envy, and general sin, told against the backdrop of a slaughterhouse for swine. As the title (and pedigree) would suggest, it is a film of instinctual rather than logical connectives; its narrative relying heavily on visual metaphor to convey mood and feeling.
The main plotline, if you can call it that, concerns a mysterious man known as “the Master of Murder” who, having fallen down “id” well, awakes …

If you’ve never seen Street Trash before, there’s no better time than now, as Synapse’s DVD release sets a new standard for cult restorations.
Street Trash’s story concerns a mysterious cache of bootleg liquor, labeled “Viper”, found within the basement wall of a lower Manhattan liquor store. Being that the store is a regular stop for the local drunk homeless, the shrewd proprietor decides the bottles of Viper would provide his customers a nice cheap fix. There’s just one catch. Those who imbibe Viper instantly melt into steaming piles of day-glo …

A friend once jokingly said, “if you expect the worst from the world, you’ll never be disappointed”. Such must be the mantra of paranoid psychopaths like Masuoka (Shinya Tsukamoto, director of Tetsuo, actor in Ichi the Killer) who wanders through Tokyo with his only friend (a video camera) and a supposed mission: to find others with the “Fear”. An invisible drone, he emphatically creates whatever he wants to see in his encapsulating society (director Shimizu accomplishes this by cleverly melding ethereal and tangible–spooky ghouls and real-life maniacs). His hub is …

Relesed the same year as Toho’s Lady Snowblood, Toei’s entry in the female-gambler period piece sub-genre of Sukeban (translated “delinquency”) shares more than a few similarities with that landmark film. In Sex & Fury Reiko Ike plays Ocho, a gambler/thief in late Meiji era Japan. Saddled from a young age with avenging the wrongful death of her detective father at the hands of three masked bandits, Reiko searches high and low in hopes of finding the culprits, her only evidence the flower/death cards retrieved from her father’s corpse. When …

BINFORD OR BARGAIN BASEMENT? If you remember my review of the original Toolbox Murders, you’ll understand my confusion when I heard the news it was being remade. When I heard Tobe Hooper was taking the reins, I was slightly more interested, but equally apprehensive.
Admittedly Hooper is a more miss than hit director. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is, without a doubt, a masterpiece of 70’s horror cinema, yet his follow up film, Eaten Alive, which reunited Hooper with Chain Saw’s star Marilyn Burns, proved to be far more interesting on …

KILLER WEREWOLF MAN IS COMING.. AND HE’S HORNY
HE-SAID: After the major disappointment that was the Dawn of the Dead remake, I felt the need to get some honest to God, 100% pure indie horror back in my system. Lo and behold, the San Francisco Horror fest had exactly what I needed.
Last night was the US Premiere of Ginger Snaps II, and unfortunately the only theatrical showing before it makes its way to DVD. Sadly, this is one film that could definitely benefit from a theatrical run, but nevertheless …

WHO’S THE BETTER BAD GUY? It’s finally here. Freddy Vs. Jason. We can settle those playground arguments of who’s a better bad guy — Freddy? Jason? I’m a fan of both, though I’d have to say Freddy’s disappointed me on much less an occasion. I saw my first Nightmare on Elm Street when I was about 6. It was Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and was playing on network television. I snuck into my dad’s den to watch the film. For a house with 7 televisions it was easy …

I actually never bothered to watch The Toolbox Murders on account it looked retarded, but after hearing that Tobe Hooper had remade the film, along with noticing the occasional site search popping up, and the fact I’m overdue for a review, I decided to pick it up.
Well, I guess sometimes first impressions are more accurate than you think.
The Toolbox Murders is the (supposedly true) story of a ski-masked murderer who takes it upon himself to cleanse the world of immoral women following the death of his daughter. He prowls …
