The Cold War was Awesome!

by Kris April 20, 2006

Ahhh, remember the days when only the Superpowers possessed nukes? The fun and frolicking Cold War times when America could really focus all of its hatred and aim all of its WPM on (basically) the Soviet Union. Back when you had an enemy you could count on. *sigh* Those were the days.

Nowadays we have to mambypamby yo-yo and tiptoe around multiple countries and still seem to come out without a solution nor a resolution. America seems to be hanging on the bottom rung lately.. or at least that’s what limited info we are procuring through media lines. Now Bush is doing the tango with China again, shamelessly plying their leader Hu Jintao with theatrics and stuffing him with banquets in his honor. And Bush probably believes he might get his way if they quit mentioning Taiwan or Falun Gong.

[Reuters] With nuclear negotiations with North Korea at a standstill, Bush asked for Hu’s help to get them going again. “I continue to seek President Hu’s advice and cooperation and urge his nation to use its considerable influence with North Korea to make meaningful progress toward a Korean peninsula that is free of nuclear weapons,” Bush said.

Hu pledged China would try to help resolve nuclear disputes with both Iran and North Korea but insisted on a diplomatic outcome. Bush has refused to rule out military action against Iran, although he says he is currently pursuing diplomacy. China, Hu said, was ready “to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.”

Don’t get me wrong, in some ways I feel for Mr. President. America is between a rock and a hard place with an impending nuclear disaster and even worse, a trade deficit!! Wait, even worse.. a country beating us at fossil fuel dependency and environmental pollution!! Oops, that sounded more sarcastic than intended. I actually applaud this plan for peaceful negotiations in opposition to strict sanctions and fruitless military attacks, but who’s to say everyone will follow suit? And is it exactly fair to force and/or threaten these countries to disclose information sans quid pro quo? What have WE done for THEM lately? So that’s why in some ways I almost feel safer when our President incessantly had his finger on the big red button.

In case you don’t care about global politics, I’ll give you the bottom line: Look forward to $4 gas come Summertime. Woo. Hoo.
