Triple Play — Documentaries about Programmers/Hackers/Geeks

by Chris October 13, 2009

Given the popularity of my article “Triple Play — Movies about Programmers/Hackers/Geeks“, I figured I might as well recommend some non-fictional portrayals of said group(s). Below are some of the best documentaries I’ve seen on a variety of subjects.

Note: Many of the videos embedded below are the full length docs. You can either click through to watch them in full screen, or download them via the DownloadHelper extension for Firefox and watch them locally.

Hackers: Wizards of the Electronics Age

A classic documentary about the pioneers of Personal Computing
Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Revolution OS

The ultimate documentary about Linux and the Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) Movement. You can get it from Amazon, or in true OSS spirit, watch it online:

Nerds 2.0.1

The sequel to the amazing Triumph of the Nerds (It’s one of my absolution favorite, but I’m trying to keep it to one video per subject.), Nerds 2.0.1 sees the history of the Internet. This one’s not currently on DVD, so the only place you can see it in its entirety is Google Video. [Sorry about the formatting here. Embedding google video kind of sucks]

Episode 1 – Networking

Episode 2 – Serving the Suits

Episode 3 – Wiring the World

Bonus docs

Freedom Downtime – The Story of Kevin Mitnick
Like the title says, it’s WBAI’s documentary about 90’s super-hacker, Kevin Mitnick.

Get Lamp
A documentary about Text Adventures and the people that make them. Further, it’s from the guy who brought you BBS: the Documentary (also check out on Google Video). The film appears to still be in production, so here’s the trailer:

Hackers: Outlaws and Angels
I was actually looking for the Hackers doc above when I came across this. I haven’t watched it in its entirety, but it looks like it could be interesting

Lastly, a new, untitled documentary about hardcore WoW’ers and the women they love
