Possibly for his own gain, uhm what am I saying.. for his own gain, Donald Trump spoke out against the 124-story, 2000 ft tall Fordham Spire, arguing that it will be a terrorist target and even called its proposal “a charade” to the NY Times last year. But its elegant, twisty-turny, rubber-neck-inducing design by one of my favorite architects Santiago Calatrava has been embraced by Chicago’s Zoning Committee and City Council. The latter even passed a measure for a special height allowance. Construction begins this year, to be completed in 2010.
This icicle-like structure has melted Chicago’s heart, so to cheesily speak. And with its ~250 condos at $600K to $5M a pop, it will also be melting savings accounts. Ah, but what a view.. well, actually the prettiest thing in the skyline will be Spire, so it’s bittersweet at best.
So the catch is? Trump’s new International Hotel & Tower will sit around the corner from the Fordham Spire, or rather in its shadow. Boo hoo.
