This is from the alternative meats aisle at the chinese grocery. We saw it, chortled, and bought. It is one of the foodstuffs built mainly on tricking the palate with texture rather than good or exact taste. It is also evidence that certain companies who create meatless options are baffled, often sneaking in “fish paste” for “vegetarian” patties.
True, this is not intended to be a standalone dish, probably setting hopes on adding it to “vegan” broth flavored with beef bits to continue the contradiction. All I remember is that these things were kinda like the grey fishball sponges served sometimes in phở where you pray that it’s not of the rocky mountain variety. Next I remember trying a longevity experiment (like that guy did with all those Twinkies, setting them on fire and what-not) but it didn’t take long for them to shrivel and disintegrate in the fridge. But I’ve never tasted swallow (the foul), so I could be entirely off base.
Final verdict: squishy yes, tasty no.

OMG! This is hilarious! And a wonderful piece of writing as well. I hope you keep up these excellent food articles. Nothing goes better together than film and food!
