…well, it’s the #1 search term on Google anyway, beating out searches for “sex”. I must apologize if you’ve already heard this story.. Chris told me about it last Wednesday and oh my god I have a life and I have work and I’m not a lightning quick blogger like Chris and I kinda veg out sometimes so I forgot about writing it up. Forgive me. So this is for those of you that didn’t know.
So why is this happening? Why are people searching for Google’s rival using er, Google? Well, to tell you the truth, I do it too. When I enable javascript (I try to disable it whenever possible, feh) and I command-n a new window in Firefox, it will plop me down into the search field box, overlooking the location bar. So I do it the lazy way, I won’t move my mouse to click into the location bar, I just start typing. The location bar is like, waaaaaaaay up there man. And the mouse is waaaaaay over there. I first did this by accident and would correct myself, typing the exact same thing all over again, a chore even if I only got past two letters, but now I just sometimes keep typing. Funny since I’m much more mouse-oriented, much to the dismay of my ex who was a total keyboard exclusive type of mac fanatic. Anyway, it seems to be a growing trend with many people, er manymanymany people, shooting Google in the search field foot.
There are several other factors involved as well. There is also the Safari browser master-and-slave derision, only allowing Google to sit in their upper right corner. There are those who have machines with the Google toolbar already installed, or the big G already set as their homepage and don’t know how to change it. There are, believe it or not, citizens of the world who do not understand how a browser works and will never attempt to venture farther north than the moving images within the screen. At any rate, this is good news in a way for Yahoo!, and many now wonder how to monetize it, hmm.
